GROUP THERAPY  REFERRALS

Trevor Armitage, a highly experienced PACFA registered psychotherapist and group therapist, is currently running fortnightly Group Therapy. The groups are mixed and have a maximum of 8 members.

The groups are designed to help clients process and heal their relational difficulties and is aimed at those who are motivated to change and have achieved relative emotional and psychological stability.

Group therapy is a powerful setting where clients can learn about and enhance the way they relate to others. Although many people find groups challenging, we all are often in a group – family, friends, school and work, and many people may not know how to best express themselves whilst also feeling valued and belonging in groups.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACH

Yalom’s constructs, the ‘group as a social microcosm’ and ‘working in the here and-now’, are important anchors of Group Therapy.

A social microcosm occurs in a ‘safe enough’ group environment where free-flowing interaction between members is gently encouraged. This fosters spontaneous interpersonal behaviour between members in ways that may mirror how they relate to others in their lives.

Trevor’s approach values here-and-now work balanced by sensitivity to clients’ past experiences and provides holding and acceptance of past issues that may be evoked by the group process.

Benefits of group therapy:

  • Practise communication skills
  • Experience non-judgmental support
  • Build self-esteem, resilience, and self-acceptance.
  • Practise effective ways of relating to others.
  • Improve relationships with partners, friends, family and at work.

Suitable referrals include clients who:

  • Have relationship difficulties, particularly interpersonal struggles, social anxiety.
  • Are willing to practise relating skills and learn from interacting with their group members.
  • Are not sure what they want out of life/work/therapy.
  • Struggling to make progress in 1:1 therapy.

If Practioners have clients who could benefit, and are considering referring them for group therapy,  Trevor is happy to discuss this to ascertain whether group could assist clients as an adjunct to their 1:1 work.

For potential group members, he first offers a free introductory phone consult, followed by some individual sessions  to build rapport and to discuss whether the group could be helpful for them.
